"Anxiety is exhausting because your mind is working incredibly hard to protect you. Therapy is about helping you work out when that protection is no longer serving you."

Anxiety

You're not imagining it — and you're not weak for struggling

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people come to therapy, and one of the most misunderstood. From the outside it can look like worrying too much, being oversensitive, or not coping well. From the inside, it feels nothing like that.

It feels like being unable to switch off. Like your mind is always three steps ahead, running through worst-case scenarios before you've even got out of bed. Like your body is permanently on alert; tense, tired, and ready for something that never quite arrives.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. And it's not a character flaw.

What anxiety can look like

Anxiety doesn't always announce itself clearly. It can show up as:

  • A constant low-level hum of worry that's just always there
  • Overthinking decisions, conversations, things you said three years ago
  • Physical symptoms e.g. a tight chest, shallow breathing, a churning stomach, difficulty sleeping
  • Avoiding situations, people, or places because of how they make you feel
  • Snapping at people, then feeling guilty about it
  • Feeling like you're holding it all together but only just
  • Panic attacks; sudden, overwhelming waves of fear that can feel terrifying even when you know, logically, that you're safe

You might recognise all of this, or just one or two things. Either way, if anxiety is making your life smaller or harder, that's worth taking seriously.

Why anxiety is so hard to just "get over"

Anxiety isn't a malfunction. It's your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do i.e. scan for danger and keep you safe. The problem is that it often can't tell the difference between a genuine threat and an awkward email, a difficult conversation, or an uncertain future.

When anxiety has been present for a long time, the body learns to stay in that state of readiness. It becomes the default. Telling yourself to calm down, or trying to think your way out of it, rarely works because the response is happening below the level of conscious thought.

This is why therapy can help in a way that willpower alone often can't.rd.

How therapy for anxiety works

At Fullstop Therapy, I work with anxiety in a way that's grounded, practical, and tailored to you. We won't just talk about how anxious you feel — we'll work to understand where it comes from, what's keeping it going, and what needs to change.

That might include:

  • Understanding the patterns and triggers underneath your anxiety
  • Working with your nervous system, not just your thoughts
  • Developing practical tools to use when anxiety spikes
  • Exploring whether past experiences  (including trauma)  are feeding your anxiety in the present
  • Gradually rebuilding a sense of safety and steadiness in your day-to-day life

There's no single formula. Some people need to understand the roots of their anxiety; others need practical strategies first. We'll work at your pace and in a way that makes sense for you.Our life coaching services can help you achieve your personal and professional goals. Our experienced coaches provide guidance, support, and motivation to help you identify your strengths, overcome obstacles, and achieve success in all areas of your life.

The kinds of anxiety I work with

I have particular experience working with:

  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Health anxiety
  • Social anxiety
  • Panic disorder and panic attacks
  • Anxiety rooted in trauma or difficult life experiences
  • High-functioning anxiety; where you appear to be managing well, but the cost is enormous

You don't have to feel this way indefinitely

Anxiety can feel so woven into who you are that it's hard to imagine life without it. But it does change. People do feel better. The goal isn't to never feel anxious again  ( some anxiety is useful and normal),  it's to get to a place where it's no longer running your life.

If you've been putting this off, waiting until things get bad enough, or telling yourself you should be able to handle it this might be the moment to try something different.

Getting started

I offer a free initial conversation so you can get a sense of how I work before committing to anything. Sessions are available in person in Gillingham, Dorset, or online across the UK/internationally.
